Welcome!

Welcome to my explorations of Buncombe County Biodiversity.

I chose to study the biodiversity of Buncombe County, NC because I currently live in Asheville and where better to start exploring than your hometown? This area has an incredible amount of biodiversity, due to being nestled in the mountains of the Southern Appalachian Region. This region is considered a hotspot for biodiversity, and Buncombe County includes part of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mount Mitchel State Park, as well as parts of Pisgah National Forest. Even though I have lived all over the country (HI, VA, FL, TX, CA), I have always felt a strong connection and admiration for this area. It never ceases to captivate me with its lush landscape and mystical energy.
According to blueridgeheritage.com "more old growth forest stands survive in the mountains of NC than in any other Southern Appalachian state, the NC mountains are home to more species of salamanders than any other place in the world, and more species of plants can be found in the mountains of NC than in any other area of similar size in North America."
My hopes are to contribute some new information about this area while raising awareness.
I think of biodiversity as a labyrinthine mosaic of living organisms, where all are linked together by invisible strings.
